Course Descriptions:

Emergency Management

The "Certificate in Emergency Management" is for Disaster Preparedness and General Emergency Management is designed to provide disaster preparedness and emergency management practitioners with a broad range of administrative skills and knowledge. The program is designed to serve as the focal point for the development and delivery of emergency management training to enhance emergency management and planning, including developing operational capabilities and facilitating an effective response and recovery from disasters. The certificate can be a self-standing or may be used as part of the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences Degree, for those specializing in Technical Management, but must be reviewed and approved by the NWOSU Oversight Committee.

Courses required for the certificate are:

NW1010B 10-Hour Construction Safety
10-Hour Construction Safety course explains the requirements of the OSHA construction safety regulations. Hazard and safety issues associated with the construction industry will be covered in this instructor led course. Course content is adaptable to specific types of construction. Construction Safety is a prerequisite to the Construction "Train the Trainer" program. Testing upon course completion. An OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety card will be issued to attendees.

Audit and Inspections is an instructor led course informing personnel on what to expect when regulators enter into an establishment. Personnel will develop an understanding of what to expect during an audit/inspection. Automotive/Vehicle Safety covers vehicle maintenance and safe driving practices. Course material reviews what and why vehicle procedures and polices need to be followed. This course can be separated into a smaller course or adaptable into any combination of the following six courses, they are as follows: accident scene procedures, safe driving practices, vehicle maintenance and inspections, winter driving, off road driving, and mobile phone safety. Cal/OSHA Regulations assists employers in establishing company guidelines to implement safe working environments by teaching the importance of Emergency Action Plans. Training also covers but is not limited to: how to read the regulations, occupational, injury and illness record keeping, and Cal/OHSA training requirements. Testing upon course completion.

NW1008 Cathodic Protection
Covers the fundamentals of grounding corrosion and cathodic protection, measures to prevent corrosion and the fundamentals of rectifiers. The material will show methods of installing an anode and creating a thermite weld. The basics of test stations and grounding of test stations will also be discussed. The personnel who attend this class are individuals that maintain natural gas systems, water towers, telecom towers, and bridges. The topics of the course include: Corrosion and cathodic protection; What is a good grounding system, Installation of an anode, creating a thermite weld, basics of test stations, and coating lighting and surge protectors.

NW342A NWOSU Course 3103 Criminal Investigations
A study of the general methods of criminal investigation: the steps of a crime scene search, methods of obtaining information, and specific steps to be taken in various criminal violations. This course will be offered through Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU), with one of the university's instructors. The course will be taught as a regularly scheduled course.

Emergency Response/Disaster Preparedness course covers the policies and procedures are, and why they need to be followed. Employee Training-Train the Trainer
Effective safety and health plans, are dependent upon up to date training. To take the "Employee Training-Train the Trainer" class the employee or department supervisor must have the Health and Safety Certification, which is the 10-Hour general industry safety class. This course teaches management to properly train personnel and or new hires on workplace safety policies and procedures, and why these procedures are important. This course will offer different types of training techniques in the classroom. The trainer will be given material to assist with training personnel. This will be an instructor led class. Excavation/Trenching course covers state and federal requirements for excavation and trenching safety. Course materials cover the process of implementing excavation and trenching safe work practices. NW311 Fall Protection
Fall Protection course is a hands-on course reviewing the rules and regulations required when dealing with fall protection issues. The instructor will cover issues dealing with slip, trips and falls; general fall protection; and personnel fall protection. The training personnel will demonstrate the correct way to wear a full body harness. Personnel will come out of the class being adept at correctly tying themselves off, at height above four feet for general industry, and six feet for construction. Testing upon course completion.

NW360A Forklift Instruction/Operation
Forklift Instruction/Operation covers the OSHA requirements on safe forklift operation. Personnel will come out of class with a better understanding of how to correctly and safely drive a forklift, and be able to identify what safety hazards are present when driving a forklift. An instructor will administer the class. This training shall be administered every 2 to 3 years depending on the company's policy, procedures, and if deemed necessary. Testing upon course completion.

NW1010A General Industry Safety
This 10 hour general industry course will include safe work practices for hazards associated with general industry per 29 CFR §1910. This course will not cover any hazards related to construction activities. The course will include hazard identification of unsafe conditions, substances and activities that can be incurred in general work areas such as manufacturing, industry, shops or any other venues where non-construction related work activities are present. An instructor will administer the class, and specific class requirements will be dependent upon the industry, and the hazards associated with a particular work environment.

This course covers the following subjects: General Safety Orientation, Hazard Communication, Entry into Grain Storage Spaces, Bucket Elevators, Dust Control, Contractor Safety, Electrical Equipment Controls, Electrical Hazards, Emergency Action Planning, Fire and Explosions, Grain Dust Hazards, Hot Work Permits, Housekeeping, Ladders, Lockout/Tagout Requirements, Man lifts, MSDS, Pesticide/Chemical Handling, Rail Car Handling, Preventive Maintenance, Respiratory Maintenance, Truck Dump Operations, Walkways and Work Surfaces, Preventing Falls, Blood Borne Pathogens, and Safety Procedures Development. Hazardous Materials course covers the basics of hazardous materials. The basics of hazardous material include, but are not limited to the following: spill control, transportation of the material, and proper storage of materials. Depending on the hazardous levels of chemicals that are used, policies and procedures training may be separated into courses for each specific area. Employees will be trained on how to research the rules and regulations when unsafe situations are present. Personnel who regularly come in contact with hazardous materials should attend the instructor led course whereas online classes will be available for all other personnel. NW150 Storm Water Management and Erosion Control & ASISTsoftware management system
This course is designed for personnel who may have storm water issues. After this course has been completed, personnel will have an understanding of the principles and practices of erosion and sediment control. Find ways to maximize the effectiveness of your existing programs during construction, and how to operate facilities using best management practices (BMP). Learn about alternative watershed planning and protection methods. Find ways to maximize the effectiveness of your existing programs. This course provides your group with ways to manage your discharges, do inspections, and what good housekeeping is. The course will cover the legal requirements, the process of erosion and sedimentation, erosion control, best management practices (BMP) selection and application, and structural and non- structural installation guidelines. Tools to involve and educate your public about stormwater pollution and your programs. You don't need a $100,000 program, (You can do most of it within your own group) but you do need training and the right software program, ASISTsoftware management system will be used in class. Each year your organization will have to produce an annual report that documents what has been performed in the previous year for your Stormwater program, this course will show you programs to do this. Develop an effective SWPPP on your own.

Lockout/Tagout courses will be specific to the type of equipment that is used in company's communication system. The course will cover the company's Lockout/Tagout policy. The material will cover why Lockout/Tagout is important, and what the Cal-OSHA and the Federal Regulations require. The course will state the procedures to go through if personnel are having problem with the equipment, and the equipment cannot be securely Lockout or Tagout. A prerequisite for the course is the general "Lockout/Tagout" program. Testing upon course completion.

Radio Frequency (RF) Safety
This course will cover the basics of Radio Frequency (RF) safety. The course material will cover what RF does to the body, and what affects it can have on the body. The student will understand the basics of RF safety. The course can be separated into the following courses: RF Exposure & Safety; RF/HVAC Safety; RF PPE requirements, RF PPE clothing, and RF PPE Monitors. The course can be separated into five specialty classes, or it can be kept very general and cover the highlights of each of the five courses. Testing upon course completion.

Rooftop Safety Hazards
Some of the communication antennas are located on the rooftop; these rooftops can be very hazardous. This course is going to cover some of the more common hazards associated with rooftops. The course will present hazards such as trip, chemical, environmental, biological and Radio Frequency (RF) hazards. It is recommended that the RF course be taken along with this course. NW315 Tower Safety Course
This course is designed to assist personnel who perform maintenance, build, work around, and or who inspects tower sites. Emphasis is placed on acceptable abetment methods, applicable standards, and the implementation of CPL 2-1.29, and Interim Inspection Procedures during Communication Tower Constructions Activities. Participants are required to bring all fall protection equipment and the necessary PPE. There will be fieldwork and students will perform work at a tower site. Please check with instructor.
